I went to Qatar after a trip to the UAE, and Doha felt like Dubai the way it was meant to be. The same luxury, a beautiful sea and beaches, great shopping, but a bit quieter and much more built for people. You can actually walk the streets and not regret skipping the taxi Where to walk in Doha: - The Corniche: a 7 km waterfront promenade around Doha Bay facing the West Bay skyline, best at sunset - Souq Waqif: a traditional market with spices, cafés and even a falcon souq, liveliest in the evening - Msheireb Downtown, Katara Cultural Village, and The Pearl for marinas and shopping - The Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar (the "desert rose" building), worth it for the architecture alone The desert is a must. We took a tour and loved it. A typical desert safari includes dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, camel rides and a stop at Khor Al Adaid, the "Inland Sea", one of the few places on Earth where the desert meets the sea. Go with a licensed operator, never try dune driving on your own Practical tips: - Best time to visit: November to March, warm but not scorching. Summer is brutally hot - The Doha Metro is modern and cheap, and with walking it covers most sights. Uber and Karwa cover the rest - Dress modestly in public (shoulders and knees covered), alcohol is served only in licensed hotel venues - Beaches: hotel beach clubs or public ones like Katara Beach Who I'd recommend it to: anyone who likes the idea of Dubai but wants a calmer, more walkable version, and anyone who's never seen a real desert
